pHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A military police officer has been detained in the killing of a journalist who reported on illegal logging in northeastern Cambodia.
Interior Ministry spokesman Gen. Khieu Sopheak said Friday that
Capt. Ean Bun Heng had been arrested in connection with death of
Vorakchun Khmer Daily reporter Hang Serei Oudom in remote Ratanakiri
province. Police believe he was killed by blows to the head with an ax.
Khieu Sopheak said the victim’s wife told the authorities the officer called him for a meeting just before he was killed and the victim’s shoes were found at the suspect’s house. He said police were questioning several other people.
Widespread illegal logging in Cambodia is generally believed to benefit influential politicians and military officers.
