HANOI - THE dissident son of a Vietnamese revolutionary leader, who was jailed for several years in a case that sparked global concern, is to mount his appeal next month, a court official said on Friday.

Cu Huy Ha Vu, whose father was a member of revered founding president Ho Chi Minh's provisional cabinet from 1945, was jailed on April 4 for anti-state propaganda activities, including advocating an end to one-party communist rule.

His appeal has now been set for Aug 2, according to an official from the Hanoi court.

Vu, 53, was handed seven years in prison followed by three years' house arrest over his writings, interviews with foreign media, and Internet material published since 2009, in a case that drew deep concern from the European Union and United States.

The French-trained legal expert was charged after twice trying to sue Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung - over a controversial bauxite mining plan and a decree that prevented class-action petitions.

US-based Human Rights Watch said the case led to 'an unprecedented movement of popular support', much of it on the Internet, from a cross-section of society in Vietnam. -- AFP
