Myanmar hails achievements at ASENA Para Sports meet

YANGON, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Para Sport Fedaration Saturday hailed its achievements of 40 medals at the 5th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Para Sport Meet 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 40 medals -- 14 golds, 19 silvers and seven bronzes – were bagged by 25 athletes in track and field, volleyball, table tennis, chess and swimming events, the sources said.

Ma Theint Thu Thu Lin glabbed three gold medals in the discus, shot put and javelin events and swimmer Naing Sit Aung pocketed three gold medals.

Zaw Moe Aung, Myo Than Htet and Myo Myint Hlaing secured the best player awards in their respective positions in the volley ball event.

Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Timor Leste have also participated in the Para Games, it said.

The tournament included a total of 11 sport events, namely athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, table tennis, sailing, sitting volleyball, bowling, badminton, chess and power lifting.

In last Games held in Thailand in January last year, a total of 26 Myanmar athletes competed in track and field, swimming and table tennis and brought home 14 golds, 16 silvers and 21 bronzes to be ranked sixth behind Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
