A group of senators on Monday called for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to issue a formal statement to counter Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen for his unethical move using the Asean Summit forum to show his personal favour for former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Senators Paiboon Nititawan, Khamnoon Sithisamarn and Sumon Sutaviriya said in a press conference that the prime minister should issue a formal statement, instead of verbal ones, to counter Hun Sen for his unethical handling of an international affair.

Mr Khamnoon said the PM's statement should adhere to diplomatic principles and clearly show Thailand's standpoint regarding Thaksin.

He urged the government to announce an indefinite delay of parliament's consideration of three memoranda of Thai-Cambodian border talks over the 4.6-square-kilometre area in dispute around the Preah Vihear temple as required by Article 190 of the constitution to show dissatisfaction with the Cambodian leader.

Mr Khamnoon said most of the people were much dissatisfied with Hun Sen's stance, which had sowed the seeds of conflicts between the Thai and Cambodian peoples. Therefore, the prime minister should counter Hun Sen with a formal statement, he added.

Mr Paiboon called for the government to adopt a tough policy with Cambodia and adhere more importance to national integrity and existence than trivial economic interests.
