PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin supports the use of music in the early development of children, saying it encourages critical thinking and improves psycho-motor skills such as voice coordination, dance and visual arts.

The Deputy Prime Minister said research had shown that children exposed to music perform better than those who are not.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, added that countries with good academic performance, such as Hungary, the Netherlands, the United States and Japan, gave emphasis to music education.

He said this at a presentation of digital pianos by South Korea’s Booyoung Housing Co Ltd to Malaysian schools at Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah here yesterday.

Booyoung donated 3,000 digital pianos, 50 of which would be given to the Korean community in Malaysia.

The company has made similar donations to schools in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

Present at the ceremony were the republic’s charge’d affaires Choi Donngyou as well as Booyoung president Kim Eui-ki and chairman Dr Lee Joong-keun.

“This donation ceremony is symbolic as it celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and South Korea,” said Muhyiddin.

He added that South Korea was among countries with the best education system in the world.

In celebration of the event, a group of children from schools in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor performed three songs on the digital pianos – Suriram, The Graduation Song and Spring of Hometown.

SK Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2 Year Five pupil Nurin Ainin Soffiya Jalaluddin said she and her friends practised for a week for the performance.
