BANGKOK: Thai Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said this morning that he would resign Friday to compete in the by-election in the Constituency 1 of southern Surat Thani province, reports China's Xinhua news agency.
He said he would go to Surat Thani Thursday night and would ask a staff to submit his resignation letter on Friday to the Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who will return to Thailand on Friday after attending the 8th Asia-Europe Meeting in Brussels.
Suthep, who is also the ruling Democrat party's Secretary-General, will register his candidacy on Oct 8.
Following his resignation, the Prime Minister will take over his responsibility on security affairs.
The Oct 30 by-election in southern Surat Thani is to find a replacement for a Democrat MP Chumpol Kanchana who lost his seat after being found guilty by the Constitution Court of making false assets declaration to the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
