The 90,000-capacity stadium in Soccer City was packed as traditional dancing and music kicked off the cup celebrations and matches.
Groups waving the national flag and blowing vuvuzela trumpets helped take South Africa into history as the first African country to host the tournament.
But casting a shadow over the event was the death of Nelson Mandela's 13-year-old great granddaughter, who was killed in what police have called a drunk driving accident in downtown Johannesburg.
The death of the teenager prompted the former president to pull out of a planned World Cup opening ceremony appearance.
Zenani Mandela, the grandchild of Zindzi Mandela, was traveling with Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela when their car overturned near the Johannesburg city centre in the early morning on Friday.
They were returning home after a World Cup kick-off concert when their car was hit by another driver who has been arrested and taken into custody.
Nelson Mandela's ex-wife was taken to hospital but suffered no serious injuries in the accident.
