Intelligence director nomination made by Obama

General James Clapper has been nominated as the new director of national intelligence by the White House, but already faces opposition from the Hill.
General James Clapper may be the United States’ next intelligence chief after a nomination by US President Barrack Obama.

The nomination was made on Saturday and is already drawing opposition from Capitol Hill.

“I don't think Clapper's the right person for the job,” Kit Bond, a main Republican Senator told the Associated Press. Such views are shared by many who see General Bond as either lacking the ability to command the authority needed as director of national intelligence, or disagree with his policy initiatives.

Others have voiced support for General Clapper, Senator Joe Lieberman said he was looking forward to working with him, according to the Associated Press.

The former director of national intelligence, Admiral Dennis Blair, was asked to resign in May due to a series of security failures, which saw the Obama administration implement a shake-up, after a report found the department to be dysfunctional and over-staffed.

If confirmed, General Clapper will head a department that oversees 16 agencies contributing to the intelligence of the United States.
