The Thai navy insisted on Friday its helicopter had not crossed into Cambodian airspace when it was fired on while making a regular food delivery to marines in Trat province stationed only 50 metres from Cambodian troops.
Cambodian soldiers fired on the unarmed Bell 121 helicopter on Thursday afternoon.
Royal Thai Marine Corps commander Vice Admiral Pongsak Phuriroj said he had sent a protest letter to the Cambodian 3rd military region chief and would meet with him tomorrow in Thailand to clarify the issue.
Delivery of food to Thai troops on the border is a regular navy chore, he said.
“We even share meals with Cambodian troops because our relationship is very good. We eat together every day,” he said.
