Valuable gong sets found in Kon Tum

Twelve valuable sets of gongs have recently been found in Dac Me village, Bo Y commune through a survey made by the Department of Culture and Information of Ngoc Hoi district, Kon Tum Central Highlands province.

Of these sets, there are sets having some tens of gongs, from small to large sizes. They are now kept by Brau ethnic minority people who are among the least six minority people group in Vietnam. Nearly 400 Brau ethnic people who are living in Dac Me village now own 94 sets of gongs in total.

National Library opens Spanish room
The National Library of Vietnam has inaugurated a reading room for those who want to read books in Spanish.

The library has collected around 2,000 documents in Spanish, including 1,000 books and 1,800 electronic books introducing the land, people and the culture of Spanish speaking countries.
The 20-seat air-conned reading room is connected to the internet through wifi.

150,000 USD to restore Nguyen Tri Phuong Royal Tomb in Hue
An amount of VND 2.8 billion (US $150,000) will be invested to restore Nguyen Tri Phuong Royal Tomb and Temple in Thua Thien Hue province.

Nguyen Tri Phuong Royal Tomb and Temple, which is located in Chi Long village, Phong Chuong commune, Phong Dien district, has been recognised as the national relic site since 1990.

Through time, the relic site has been degraded and even the tomb has been illegally dug for antique and jewellery.

Nguyen Tri Phuong was a famous general during the Nguyen dynasty who sacrificed in the fight against French attack on Hanoi citadel in 1873.

Seven more people in Kon Tum recognised as folk artisans
Seven more ethnic minority people from the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum have been recognised as ‘Folk artisans’ by the Vietnam Folk Arts Association.

This was announced by the Kon Tum Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism on July 7. The seven artisans are from the Ba Na, Gie Trieng and Brau ethnic groups.

They are recognised as folk artisans in the fields of epic poetry (three artisans, two of whom are dead), and ethnic minority music (making instruments, performing and teaching musicians).
The decision brings the total number of folk artisans in Kon Tum to 17.

‘Vietnamese cultural days’ held in Bashkortostan
‘Vietnamese cultural days’ took place in Bashkortostan, a Republic of Russia, on July 6-7.
Around 1,000 people attended the opening ceremony, which was held in the Cultural Palace in the capital city of Ufa, to see 14 performances by Vietnamese artists.

Host artists also joined in the event by staging a number of performances.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Tran Chien Thang said the cultural event not only aims to introduce the Bashkortostan people to Vietnamese culture but also to create a chance for the two sides to exchange and learn about each others’ cultural and spiritual treasures.

Bashkortostan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Culture and Nationalities Policy, Ilydus Ilishev, expressed his hope that the event would help strengthen bilateral ties, especially in the fields of economy and culture.

The entire corridor and vestibule of the palace was used to showcase Vietnam’s traditional musical instruments, handicrafts and traditional costumes.

Historic Nguyen dynasty stele discovered in Phu Tho
A stele made under the Nguyen dynasty has been discovered recently by a family in Bach Hac ward, Viet Tri town in the northern province of Phu Tho.

The stone stele, found by the Nguyen Huu Dien family, is one of the five missing steles of the Dinh Hac (Hac communal house) in the locality.

Its dimensions, in metres, are 1.4 (height), 0.59 (width), and 0.19 (thickness).

The stele was made in 1818, the 17th year of King Gia Long’s reign, according to Han writings on its two faces.

The early Nguyen dynasty stele is a very valuable find in terms of science, history and especially fine arts, scientists said.

It is now on display at Tam Giang temple, in Bach Hac ward.

1 million USD for restoration of Voi Phuc Temple
The construction for restoration of Voi Phuc Temple (Kneeling Elephant) started on July 4 in Hanoi.

The total investment for the project is put at VND 18 billion (around US $1 million).
The project is expected to complete after 270 days.


The Temple has been called Voi Phuc Temple as there are two kneeling elephants right on the either side of the entrance of the temple. This temple was built to worship Royal Highness Linh Lang. It is located in the West of Thang Long capital (now it is in Cau Giay ward, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi).

This is the fourth relic site under restoration to celebrate the 1000th Thang Long – Hanoi after Kim Lien communal house in Dong Da district, located in the south, Bach Ma Temple in Hoan Kiem, located in the east, and Quan Thanh Temple, located in the north of the capital city.

Vietnam to hold photo exhibition in France
The Vietnam Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decided to organise a photo exhibition in France in the third quarter of this year.

The exhibition, which will be named ‘Vietnam Beauty’, will be held at the Vietnam Culture Centre in France.

This is one of the activities organised abroad to advertise and popularise Vietnamese culture, land and people to the international community.

The Ministry’s Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition will be in charge of organising this exhibition.

Localities to organise culture and sport festivals
Localities are now setting up plans to organise culture, sports and tourism festivals in anticipation of the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently approved the programme on culture, sports and tourism days of the Red River delta provinces 2009.


This will be the big event of the ten Red River delta provinces which is scheduled to take place in October in Thai Binh province.

The detail programme will be completed by July.
A similar festival will also be held in Bac Ninh northern province in 2010. The festival aims to introducing the image, economic potential , culture, people and land of Bac Ninh province.

In preparation for the festival, from now until 2010, the province will also hold various activities such as exhibitions, folk games, trade and tourism fair, culinary, arts and quan ho (love duets) singing performance, the speciality of the locality.


110 rank-bestowing records discovered in Ha Tinh
Central Ha Tinh Province’s Culture, Tourism and Sports Service said that it has discovered 110 ancient rank-bestowing records at a pagoda in My Loc commune, Can Loc district.


They include six records of Canh Hung reign (1740-1786), two records of Minh Mang reign (1820-1840), four records of Thieu Tri reign (1841-1847), six records of Tu Duc reign (1848-1882), one record of Dong Khanh reign(1886-1888), 26 records of Thanh Thai reign (1889-1906), 14 records of Duy Tan reign 1907-1915) and 52 records of Khai Dinh reign.


At present, these records are being preserved by the My Loc war veterans and elderly associations.


Da Lat Flower Festival to be held in December
A big flower festival will be held from December 18 to 23 in Da Lat, Lam Dong Central Highlands province.


The flower festival is one of the national events to welcome the 1000th anniversary celebration of Thang Long Hanoi.


The Xuan Huong river will be the central point of the flower festival which will be surrounded by flower streets and flower towers. A flower parade will also take place around the river.


A flower fair, flower and bonsai exhibition will also be under the framework of the festival.
The festival is held once every two years by Da Lat administration.
