HANOI, Vietnam – A bus driver in Vietnam has been sentenced to seven years in prison for causing the deaths of 20 people last year when his vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.
Presiding Judge Nguyen Ha Ngan says Tran Van Truong, 36, was convicted of violating traffic laws causing serious consequences at the half-day trial Thursday.
The bus was swept away last October in the central province of Ha Tinh during floods caused by Typhoon Megi. Truong was accused of ignoring police warnings to stay away from the country's flooded main highway.
Truong and 17 passengers managed to swim to safety but 20 others drowned.
