Chinese, Taiwanese suspects part of Asian syndicate: Police

Mariel Grazella, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Fri, 06/10/2011

Chinese and Taiwanese citizens recently arrested by the National Police were allegedly part of a cyber crime syndicate that could span other countries in Asia, police said on Friday.

At the request of the Chinese and Taiwanese police forces, the National Police nabbed 170 Chinese and Taiwanese citizens from 10 different locations in and around Jakarta on Thursday for alleged cyber crimes.

National Police deputy spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said the suspects belonged to the same crime syndicate.

“They offered shares as if they were affiliated to a company,” he said, adding that similar arrests had taken place in Cambodia and Thailand.

“There are indications that these scams, which can be categorized as transnational crimes, have occurred not only in Indonesia, but also in other countries,” Boy said on Thursday.

He said that although the suspects were arrested in different countries, they could belong to the same syndicate.

“They generally are from one syndicate. Cyber crime is organized crime, meaning that those involved are interlinked,” Boy said.
