On Saturday he was in Mumbai, India’s financial hub, where he announced the US would relax export controls over sensitive technology built in India.
In talks to boost jobs in both countries, he told his Indian hosts he would move the US economically closer to India, in order to revive weakened budgets.
He told a meeting of US and Indian business leaders that "the US sees Asia, especially India, as the market of the future."
While there is still a stereotype of India that describes it as land of call centres and back-offices that cost American jobs, he said, "these are old stereotypes..old concerns which ignore today’s realities."
After Mr Obama's weekend speech, the White House announced he would support India’s membership of four Global non-proliferation organisations, in order to reassure the country that Washington is listening to its ideas.
