Viet Nam, Laos to accelerate border demarcation

BINH THUAN – Viet Nam and Laos have agreed to accelerate implementation of their border-marker project in 2010.

The agreement was reached at the 19th annual meeting of the Viet Nam-Laos border delegation, which was held in southern Binh Thuan Province of Viet Nam from February 28-March.1.

Viet Nam's delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son and the Lao delegation by Deputy Foreign Minister Bounkeut Sansomsak.

Participants reviewed the efforts of ministries, localities and the relevant agencies of the two countries in implementing the Viet Nam-Laos Agreement on National Border Regulations, thus helping maintain stability, social order and security, as well as facilitating socio-economic development in their border areas.

They devised plans for border works, including the issue of unplanned migration, unregistered inter-racial marriages, and the construction of border gates and trade centres and markets along the border of the two countries.

Five new markers had been installed on the Viet Nam-Laos border, Son La provincial authorities said.

The markers were planted from Muong Leo Commune in Son La Province's Sop Cop District, Viet Nam, to the Sieng kho District of Houaphan Province, Laos.

Surveys of another 15 sites for the installation of another eight markers in the two provinces this dry season are underway.

Viet Nam, Cambodia veterans increase co-operation

Phnom Penh — War veterans of Viet Nam and Cambodia will tighten their co-operation in many fields after a deal on friendship and co-operation was made between war veterans' associations of the two countries in Phnom Penh yesterday.

The agreement was reached at a meeting the same day between the Cambodian Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, Ith Samheng, and head of the visiting Vietnamese delegation, Lieutenant General Tran Hanh.

The lieutenant general, who is chairman of the Viet Nam War Veterans' Association (VWVA), is leading a delegation to Cambodia from March 1-4.

The agreement will increase coordination in the dissemination of information regarding the traditional friendship and mutual support between the states, armies and war veterans' associations of Viet Nam and Cambodia, domestically and internationally.-VNS
