LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who fled to Southeast Asia after killing a Southern California woman and stealing her jewelry more than three decades ago has been sentenced to prison in Los Angeles.

Ninh Kim Nguyen (win) was ordered Monday to serve up to life in prison.

The 55-year-old fled the country in 1983 after being investigated as a suspect in the fatal stabbing of Bui Khuyen (kween) at her Alhambra apartment.

He was arrested in Cambodia in 1997 and was returned to Vietnam where he was tried and convicted in an unrelated jewel theft case. He served 14 years in Vietnam before being taken back to the United States to face the murder and theft charge in Alhambra.
