PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni journeyed Monday to China for a medical checkup, according to the royal palace, which gave no details about his health.

The palace said in a brief statement that the 57-year-old constitutional monarch flew to Beijing but did not say how long he would stay or if there was a particular reason for his checkup.

Keo Puth Reasmey, a brother-in-law of the king, told reporters at the airport that the monarch was advised by his Chinese doctors to have a medical checkup every six months.

Sihamoni assumed the throne in October 2004 after his father, King Norodom Sihanouk, abruptly abdicated due to ill health.

Former King Sihanouk, now 88, regularly sees doctors in China and has suffered from a number of ailments, including colon cancer, diabetes, hypertension and two strokes. He returned home earlier this month from Beijing, where he had spent nine months for medical treatment.
