On Thursday, Latin American and Asian countries urged the UN Security Council to order an immediate end to the bombardment of Libya and launching peace talks between the rebels and Muammar Gaddafi government officials.

The appeal was signed, among others, by Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Cambodia, Indonesia, Mali and Vietnam. The document has drawn support from Brazil, India and South Africa; - the countries that have failed to sign it because of their current status of the Security Council’s non-permanent members.

The western coalition’s aircraft have been delivering strikes at facilities in Libya since the 19th of March, causing numerous civilian casualties.
