AsiaRooms.com - Don't miss Angkor Archaeological Park on a stay in Siem Reap

(PRLEAP.COM) AsiaRooms.com highlights people staying in accommodation in Siem Reap in July should not miss out on the chance to explore the region’s ancient past.

The area is famed for its proximity to the Angkor Archaeological Park, which is dominated by the impressive Angkor Wat, featuring a 66-metre tall central tower and numerous other remnants of the Khmer Empire built between the ninth and 15th centuries.

While history buffs staying in accommodation in Siem Reap should always make an effort to go and see the historic ruins, this is more true now than usual given that a number of artefacts which were smuggled out of Cambodia during the civil war have just been returned.

Seven sculptures, including an engraved plinth, a large bas-relief and a head of the Buddha, were repatriated after being discovered by customs officials in Los Angeles back in 2008.

They are now back in their rightful home after being handed over by the US in a ceremony at the coastal city of Sihanoukhville, in which the ancient relics were blessed by Buddhist monks.

Anyone who is keen to visit the historic area during their time in Siem Reap will find they have plenty of exploring to do - the site covers around 400 square kilometres and is one of south-east Asia’s most important archaeological regions.

A one-day pass to the UNESCO World Heritage Site will set tourists back $20 (£13.50).
