The Ministry of Public Security has coordinated with the Supreme Prosecution of the Republic of Korea on a project to combat drug-related crime.

The project was launched in Hanoi on March 19 by the Standing Office on Drugs and Crime under the Ministry of Public Security. It was funded by the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), with a total of US$2,869,000, including US$2,390,000 in the form of official development assistance (ODA).

The three-year project will increase the capacity of national drug control agencies and build drug control data base to help ministries, agencies and localities coordinate their efforts in managing drug users.

At the launch ceremony, Major General Vu Hung Vuong, deputy head of the General Department for Crime Prevention under the Ministry of Public Security, said the project demonstrates the effective cooperation between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea as it responds to a national programme on drug prevention and control, aimed at building a drug-free ASEAN by 2015.

Major General Vuong expressed his thanks to the Korean Government and relevant agencies and pledged to do his best to make the project a success.

Heo Chul-ho, head of the Department for Drug Prevention and Control under the Supreme Prosecution of the Republic of Korea, said his agency has cooperated effectively with ASEAN-member countries, including Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines, in combating drug-related crime. The cooperation between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea will help both countries consolidate mutual trust and boost bilateral relations, he added.
