Direk Lawansiri, chairman of the regulatory commission, said that at the meeting early this month the nine countries - the Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand - agreed to consider the establishment proposal in detail. After two years of planning, the term of reference for Aern was drafted.
The countries’ proposals would then be discussed at the next meeting.
"Each country showed its commitment to upgrade the regional regulatory framework, for a quick and concrete result. This is the first step to give birth to a regional regulatory agency, in line with the current energy development trend and the regional integration in 2015," Direk said.
The meeting was part of the third conference by ERC on "Energy Regulation and the Promotion of Energy Conservation". Regulators from 11 countries attended the conference, to present their demand side management and demand response strategies under the changing environmental condition.
