Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who is on a day-long visit to India, was on Tuesday accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh received Vejjajiva at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The two ministers are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, of which the prime focus would be on trade and security ties.
"I am very pleased to be here today. India and Thailand are important strategic partners. We have enjoyed close and cordial relations for long time.
We look forward to discussion how we can energize various bilateral mechanisms that we have. Put an aim to tapping to great potential as far as trade, investment and tourism and other areas, as well as cooperating to meet the challenges on security matters," Vejjajiva told reporters.
Both the nations are expected to sign a free trade agreement in goods, services and investments.
Thailand has a huge market for tourism and views Indian tourists as the fastest growing segment, and there are more than 140 flights to Thailand from various Indian cities.
India and Thailand share maritime boundaries and both sides face common challenges of piracy, terrorism and smuggling. The two nations are already conducting joint and coordinated patrols on the north of Bay of Bengal up to straits of Malacca.
The Thai delegation also includes Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, Industry Minister Chaiwuti Bannawat, Deputy Commerce Minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot, President of Thailand Trade Representatives Kiat Sittheeamorn and Deputy Secretary-General to the PM and Acting Government Spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn.
He will also be meeting CEO's from FICCI, CII and ASSOCHAM during his visit. (ANI)
