USNS Mercy, a US hospital ship, will leave the Sandiego naval base in California on May 1 for Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Timor Leste (East Timor) as part of the Pacific Partnership programme.
The April 15 statement issued by the Commanders of the Third and the Pacific Fleets said the programme will be conducted throughout the summer to strengthen relations between the US and host countries and partners in Southeast Asia and Oceania by administering medical and oral care and carrying out several technical projects.
The 2010 Pacific Partnership programme, the fifth of its kind, will also provide the US with the precious experiences of the host countries’ civilian and military experts with which the US military can react more rapidly in future emergency rescue operations.
