Malaysia Contributes To Better Welfare Of Vietnamese Muslims

HO CHI MINH CITY (CAMBODIA), June 3 (Bernama) -- The Muslim community in Vietnam has received much assistance from Malaysia to improve their standards of living, especially in terms of education, said Malaysian Consul General here, Khairi Omar.

Khairi said Malaysian non-governmental organisations (NGO) and companies had also helped in these efforts by sponsoring Vietnamese Muslim students to further their studies in Malaysia.

Although Muslims there comprised only five per cent of the population, their lives had begun to improve and the group were gradually being accepted by the country's majority, he told Bernama during a visit by the Jejak Warisan Jawi II (JWJ2) exepdition to his home, here Saturday.

Regarding the JWJ2, Khairi said he hoped the four-wheel drive (4WD) expedition could be extended to other continents in future.

The expedition organised by Majma' Budaya, Warisan Jawi, Putera 1Malaysia Club and backed by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry aims to track down Malay heritage abroad.

The group arrived in Ho Chi Minh City today after conducting heritage and community activities with residents of An Giang yesterday, and is scheduled to travel 300km to Natrang next.
