HA NOI — The Bank for Investment and Development of Viet Nam (BIDV) needs to uphold its important role in job creation and the development of enterprises, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said at a conference in Ha Noi last Saturday to review the bank’s results for the past year and plans for 2010.
Last year, BIDV helped fulfill its role as a development bank with its nationwide poverty-reduction programme pursuant to Government Decree No 30A. The bank provided VND158 billion (US$8.54 million) in assistance to five poor districts in the northern mountain provinces of Son La and Dien Bien, the central provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, and the southern province of Binh Dinh, helping build houses and bridges and develop education and health services in these remote and disadvantaged areas.
Recognising the bank’s achievements last year, Hung said BIDV had also confirmed its place as a major commercial bank, with an increasing share of the financial and monetary market and impressively expanding international operations in Laos and Cambodia.
"The development of the banking system throughout the country, including BIDV, will help enterprises grow and create jobs, as well as promote the development of rural economy," said Hung.
He urged BIDV’s skilled staff to prepare for the bank’s equitisation this year. The bank is also expected to become a financial group in the future.
It has targeted credit growth of 18-20 per cent this year. — VNS
