Gen Yutthasak Sasiprapa said on Wednesday that no commanders of the armed forces will be removed after he officially takes office as the new defence minister.
He said he will start working after the prime minister has delivered the government’s policy statement to the parliament.
Gen Yutthasak urged all parties to feel comfortable. He would have discussions with all parties concerned before any high ranking military officials are transferred.
Currently, only three high ranking military officials are due to be replaced because their tenure is ending — the permanent secretary for defence, the supreme commander and the navy chief.
The new defence minister said that after attending the first cabinet meeting he will have talks with armed forces chiefs. He had no hard feelings in liaising between the armed forces and the Pheu Thai Party and believed the relationship between the two sides would improve.
He would also make a courtesy call on the president of the Privy Council, Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, to pay his respects to his former commander.
“At the first meeting of the Defence Council, I will discuss plans to visit the three southernmost provinces with army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha. After that I will visit the Army Region 2 commander and go to the disputed areas on the Thai-Cambodian border,” he said.
Gen Yutthasak said he was ready to have talks with Cambodia about the border dispute.
