HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Police in southern Vietnam have charged three men and one woman for allegedly trafficking people to China to sell their kidneys.
State-run Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper says the three male suspects had also sold their own kidneys in China. The four were charged with "organizing other people to flee the country." They face 12 years in prison.
The report published Wednesday says the suspects are accused of illegally moving 19 Vietnamese into China with the purpose of selling their kidney from 2009 until the ring was uncovered in February
It says each kidney was being sold for between 40 million dong ($2,000) and 50 million dong ($2,500).
Prosecutors are now preparing a possible court case. Vietnam forbids the trade of body parts.
