The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the United States to attend the 65th United Nations General Assembly and the ASEAN-US Leaders Meeting. On the sideline, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet with investors in the United States.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and high ranking delegates, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the President of Thai Trade Representative Mr Kiat Sittheeamorn, and the Secretary General to the Prime Minister, are scheduled to visit New York City, the United States, as they are to attend the 65th United Nations General Assembly and the ASEAN-US Summit. Meeting with investors in the United States is also one of the itineraries. The following are the objectives and itinerary of the visit.
This year’s 65th United Nations General Assembly is expected to see more delegates than last year’s meeting, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) meeting will also take place. It will provide a forum for exchanges of experiences in achieving MDGs and in taking the country toward MDGs by 2015.
As for the ASEAN-US Leaders Meeting, the meeting is to be the second summit of its kind after the first summit was held in Singapore at the sidelines of the APEC Leaders Meeting. At that time, Thailand was also the chair of ASEAN. This year’s summit is a testament to the policy of the United States in re-engagement with South East Asia. At the meeting, the Prime Minister intends to bring up the issues of the necessities and the roles of the United States in engaging with the region in order to bring about regional stability, elimination of trade barriers, and elevation of the relationship between ASEAN and the United States to the “strategic partnership” level.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister will have an opportunity to meet with the institutional investors in the United States at the US-ASEAN Business Council meeting, during which the Prime Minister could use this occasion to build up confidence with Thailand amongst US investors and the business community. The Prime Minister will also use this opportunity to illustrate the strong economic recovery of Thailand, which is supported by the government and private sectors and through various government policies that are investor-friendly. In addition, there will be a Q&A session in which the Prime Minister will respond to inquiries regarding many issues, such as, Map Ta Phut, territorial dispute with Cambodia, and the 3G mobile auction. On this occasion, the Prime Minister will be able to clear up all the issues regarding government policies and the Thai judicial system.
