Auckland Rallies Behind Disaster Victims

Wednesday, 7 October, 2009

Auckland will unite in a relief fund performance for the victims of the Pacific tsunami and South-East Asia earthquake this Saturday, says Labour Associate Ethnic Affairs spokesperson Raymond Huo.

"The devastation caused from both tragedies is ongoing and the death toll continues to mount. It's vital that communities throughout the country join together and help out in the relief effort for the countries affected, which all share close bonds with New Zealand," Raymond Huo said.

"I urge the people of Auckland to come out in force this Saturday and show solidarity and support for victims and family and friends who have lost loved ones."

The relief fund performance, organised by the Pakuranga Chinese Association and Chinesetown.co.nz, will be a showcase of traditional Asian dance that encapsulates the vibrancy of these communities. The special event will include many other ethnic communities and organisations, including the newly formed Botany Chinese Association and the Filipino community.

Raymond Huo praised the work of the New Zealand Government which has pledged an initial $1 million emergency natural disaster relief package for Indonesia, the Philippines, Viet Nam and Cambodia.

"With thousands of people homeless and a vast number still unaccounted for, this support will have an immediate impact where it is needed most."

"New Zealanders are giving and compassionate people. I implore communities across the country to support fundraising efforts that will be taking place across the nation in the following weeks like the one in Botany this Saturday."
