The first climate change convention would be held in Langkawi island in northern Malaysia next year, said the organizer at its launching ceremony on Monday here.
The convention was a non-profit project organized by a local company named Asian Overland Services Conventions & Events Sdn. Bhd., supported by the Malaysian Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry and the Malaysian Tourism Ministry.
Group managing director of the organizer, Anthony Wong, said that the four-day convention would be kick off on May 19 next year and he expected some 600 participants from the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to take part in the meeting to discuss regional environmental issues.
ASEAN has 10 member countries, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, The Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.
Wong said that the convention would provide an interactive platform for participants to learn ways to become financially, environmentally and socially responsible, in order to combat climate change.
He said that the meeting was expected to attract representatives from all industry sectors.
He added that other activities for the convention included the Save Our Earth Awards. The awards would be given to organizations and individuals who have showed outstanding effort in protecting the environment.
