Senior Mekong officials to hear youth recommendations to curb human trafficking

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thirty youth leaders are set to present Friday to senior Mekong officials their recommendations to curb human trafficking in the Asian sub-region.

Among the issues the youth delegates are expected to raise at the 3rd Mekong Youth Forum 2010 are the formation of a regional youth committee on migration and trafficking, greater participation of the youth in policy-making processes, and inclusion of trafficking and migration in the school curriculum.

Social welfare and anti-trafficking officials from Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam arrived Thursday and they are expected to hear the recommendations of the youth and present their countries commitment to address the problem that affected at least 15,000 people in Mekong in 2009.

Among the senior government officials set to attend Friday afternoon’s final session of the youth forum here are Cambodia’s Ministry of Women Affairs Secretary of State San Arun, China’s Minister of Public Security Meng Qingtian, Laos’ Ministry of Public Security Anti-Trafficking Division acting head Phetsamone Vongpadith, Myanmar’s Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Director Saw Win, Thailand’s National Operation Center on Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking, Ministry of Social Development and Human Security chief Sunee Srisangatrakullert, and Vietnam’s Child Protection and Care, Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Deputy Director Dang Hoa Nam.
