Since that day was already a holiday (Discovery Day, now replaced by Emancipation Day), the holiday was placed on the birthday of then-Prime Minister Eric Williams, although it was officially the date of the first meeting of parliament under the republican constitution. The holiday was abolished in 1996, but was reinstated in 2002.

The role his court played during his term influenced the supreme courts (or constitutional courts) of almost all of the world's countries.

Today is Liberation Day of the Bolvadin and Çay districts of Afyon province and the Gökçeada district of Çanakkale province. Bolvadin and Çay were liberated from Greek occupation on this day in 1922. Gökçeada had to wait for another 10 years to be liberated.
